AP Chinese Language and Culture (Barron's Test Prep) This suggestion is for Intermediate-High, Advanced-Low learners that what to improve their language skills. Although this book was meant for high school students studying for an exam, AP prep books provide great reading and listening material across a number of topics that adults often talk about. The prompts for speaking and writing are great as well (and are useful when working alone or with an online tutor [think ‘Italki’]).

Plecko Chinese Dictionary This is the single most important, the most useful app, you’ll ever have in Chinese. This dictionary allows you to look up words using pinyin, which means when you hear a word you don’t know you can approximate its spelling and find it. It has the pronunciation and a whole host of other features that make this app indispensable.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) This summer program is phenomenal. I did CLS for Indonesian. I’m sure the Chinese program is just as good. Unlike the Indonesian program (and most others actually), the Chinese CLS program requires a minimum of two years of college-level Chinese, or its equivalent, prior to the start date.
